MEET THE TEAM : AL

Al, our Bell Captain, was born in the beautiful island of Puerto Rico and came to New York when he was just 6 months old. He loved playing basketball as a young boy in the Bronx. He started his employment at the Salisbury Hotel 32 years ago and mentions that the best thing about working here are the friendly and professional people he works with.

Al likes to spend his free-time with his family and enjoys cooking Japanese cuisine such as Okonomiyaki (savory pancakes containing a variety of ingredients), Nabe (hot pot dish), Udon (noodle dish) and Zosui (rice soup). Why Japanese cuisine? That's because he loves traveling to Japan. Al has been there multiple times and seen Fuji, Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka, Use, Arashiyama and many, many other places.

Al's home borough, the Bronx, is also a great place to visit if Japan is too far for you. It is the only New York borough that's physically attached to the mainland and it's most famous for these three attractions: the beautiful New York Botanical Gardens, The Bronx Zoo and The Yankee Stadium.

Hop on the train to the Bronx and spend some quiet time in the nature.  The Botanical Garden spans some 250 acres of Bronx Park and includes a 50-acre forest, featuring some of the oldest trees in the city.
The Bronx Zoo is one of New York's most popular attractions, with more than 4,000 animals housed on its 265 acres. Common favorites, including gorillas and polar bears, reside at the nature park. Keep an eye out for the daily penguin and sea lion feedings, plus other rotating activities and demonstrations.
The Yankees are one of the most famous sports teams in the world. On a guided tour you'll be able to admire the enormity of the most expensive baseball stadium ever built, and admire the ballpark from Monument Park - an open-air museum where the retired numbers and plaques honoring Yankee greats like Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Lou Gehrig are displayed.
Arthur Avenue - The Bronx's own Little Italy Just south of the Botanical Gardens, Arthur Avenue runs north to south through the Belmont neighborhood of the Bronx. The area is known for the high quality and great value of its fantastic assortment of Italian-American restaurants, delis, grocers, pasta-makers, butchers, fish markets, bakeries, gourmet coffeehouses and other shops and services.
THE BRONX MUSEUM OF THE ARTS

Founded in 1971 and featuring more than 800 works, this multicultural art museum shines a spotlight on 20th- and 21st-century artists who are either Bronx-based or of African, Asian or Latino ancestry.

Pay homage to Poe in the very house where he wrote literary gems including “Annabel Lee” and “The Bells.” From 1846 through 1849, the cottage housed the writer and, until her death from tuberculosis, his wife, Virginia. It is now overseen by the Bronx County Historical Society.

EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: KELI LAING

We got to chat with our shining star of the front desk, Keli, and ask her few questions about her true passion for acting and theatre, including her tips for theater lovers.

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Keli Laing. By day, I am a front desk agent at the lovely midtown, Manhattan boutique hotel, The Salisbury. By night (and my days off), I am an aspiring actress, writer, and director who just so happened to finally write, direct, and produce her very first showcase.

Tell us more about the play that you wrote and directed?

It's called 'For The Love Of It...' and its a play about following your heart's true desires. Broken up into three one acts, the audience gets to take a look at the lives of several New Yorkers who are dealing with the trials and tribulations of life and love in the Big Apple.

How does New York City inspire you? Are there any special places you go for inspiration?

This is where it's at! This is where you come to be inspired. By all the different walks of life you pass by every day. By all the different businesses that continuously go up in the hopes to making a difference in life. By all the different classes and courses that are offered here to better sharpen any skills and/or talents you may have or want to have. Yes, life moves super fast here, but that is because everyone you're surrounded by is working hard. Even if you try to avoid it, after a while something sparks something in your mind to give "something" a try.

What would you recommend for theater lovers to see and do in New York City during their trip?

Definitely go down to a TKTS booth. There are several to check out. That is where you can find great discounts on Broadway and off-Broadway shows. However, you must go the day of and it is first come first serve. I also recommend looking up whats playing at some of the independent movie theaters throughout New York. There's so much beauty in those independent films.

If you're in town on April,19th, come see my play in downtown, Brooklyn! Tickets are available at www.ticketriver.com/event/15107

MEET THE TEAM: MOHAMMED

We are pleased to introduce to you the man behind the scenes at the Salisbury Hotel. Haniff Mohammed migrated to New York City from Trinidad & Tobago with his wife and 4 daughters when opportunity presented itself. He has been with the Salisbury Hotel for 20 years and started as a Security Officer, then a Timekeeper. Currently he works in Guest Services and as a Fire Safety Director as well as responding to many other matters vital to keep the hotel operations running smoothly. This includes running the freight elevator and receiving deliveries. But most important duty of his is to amuse us all with his funny jokes which he never seems to run out since there's a new one every day.

Why do you think NYC is one of the most popular places to visit?

NYC has every aspect of life you can imagine. Just take a look around when you're on the subway. There are so many diverse nationalities. For example in my home borough Queens, there are over 138 different languages spoken which is more than in any other area in the United States. We also have the Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island: gateway for millions of immigrants to the United States as the nation's busiest immigrant inspection station from 1892 until 1954. Historically quite remarkable place to visit. NYC also has over 80 wonderful museums to visit. See a full list of them here.
What would be the one thing you'd recommend everyone to see while here?

My personal favorites are the Empire State Building, the 24 hour buzz of Times Square, Yankee Stadium and Washington Square Park, well-known for its arch, honoring George Washington.

What do you enjoy doing on your free time?

We have many West Indian cookouts at the Delaware Riverside with friends in the summer time and I also love to travel. My most recent travels have taken me to England, India and Israel.

MEET THE TEAM : FELIX

It is always sad to see one of our colleagues leave, but at the same time we celebrate the years we got to spend together and getting to know each other. Recently we said goodbye to a true character; Felix, our beloved houseman. He has been a cheery fixture of our hotel for the past 30 years so his retirement was very well deserved. Felix plans to split his time between his native home Dominican republic with Miami and NYC, just simply enjoying life and the freedom to travel.

Felix has been described as an ‘outstanding’ employee and human being with a ‘very pleasant personality’ by his peers. We’ll miss his playful nature and funny antics. Good luck and enjoy your retirement full-hearted, Felix.

What do you think is the best thing about NYC?

"Central Park. It reminds me of Westchester suburbs where I was born. I like taking long bike rides there or just walking around, admiring nature. Central Park Zoo is also a fun place to visit. The 6.5 acre zoo features polar bears, sea lions, monkeys, a petting zoo and much more."

If you had just one day to explore the city, what would you do?

"I'd visit the Empire State Building's 102nd floor. It was not open when I was a kid and I never got to go there. Another thing I'd do would be to walk the Highline Park. The last stretch of High Line officially opened last Saturday. This final half-mile section finishes the 22-block walkway of abandoned stretch of elevated rails that's been turned into a beautiful park filled with flowers, grasses and trees. Worth the visit!

MEET THE STAFF : PAUL FROM THE BRONX

Paul has worked at the Salisbury Hotel as a bellman for five years. He hails from the Bronx and besides providing his friendly service to the hotel customers he also has deep passion for real estate development and construction. He has worked on renovating real estate mainly in the Queens and the Bronx, familiar neighborhoods for him.

Paul takes great pride on the quality of work done in his properties just as he takes pride in working at the Salisbury Hotel and providing guests with the most courteous service. He really enjoys meeting people from all over the world.

If you're planning on taking the trip to the Bronx during your visit in NYC, here are few of its most popular attractions:

The Bronx Zoo is one of New York's most popular attractions, with more than 4,000 animals housed on its 265 acres. There's an extensive daily schedule of feedings and demonstrations, world class exhibits like the Jungle World, Tiger Mountain, the Sea Lion Pool and latest attraction Madagascar!. Bronx Zoo, 2300 Southern Boulevard, Bronx.

Yankee Stadium, 161st St. and River Avenue, Bronx.

It's one of the most famous attractions in the Bronx, and there's hardly a better time to visit the New York Botanical Garden than right now in spring. Azaleas, crabapples, lilacs and flowering dogwoods are all in full bloom, the seasonal three-acre Rock Garden has just re-opened and is bursting with alpine flowers and woodland plants, and the 250-acre old-growth Native Forest is teeming with a broad range of resident and migratory birds, including nesting great horned owls and red-tailed hawks. NYBG, 2900 Southern Boulevard, Bronx.

MEET THE TEAM : KELI

Keli is an experienced guest service professional hailing from Connecticut. She loves the city, especially downtown Brooklyn, fine dining and wining, live music events, and you can even spot her on off-broadway theater stage every now and then since she's also an aspiring actress.

What do you like best about living in NYC?

The convenience of having everything no more than a subway ride away.
Red 58
What places do you frequent for lunch/dinner?

Red 58 is a sleek restaurant, bar and lounge right behind the Salisbury Hotel on 58th St. between 6th and 7th Avenues. I often go there for their $11.98 lunch special. It's usually nice and quiet and they have the friendliest staff.

Another place I visit frequently for lunch is Fresh & Co. located on 57th Street between 6th and 5th Avenues. They serve fresh, healthy, locally sourced foods that are free from synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and other additives.

Other places worth mentioning are Angelo's just few doors down from the Salisbury (117 W 57th St.) that serves amazing thin crust coal-oven pizza, excellent pastas and salads. Well Green Market just around the corner (6th Avenue between 57th and 58th Street) has great buffet lunch I often go for. Well Green Market is open 24 hours a day and has large selection of groceries, hot food bar, salad bar, soup section and a frozen yogurt and smoothie bar.

Where do you shop?

I like the Herald Square area (intersection of Broadway, Sixth Avenue and 34th Street) for "one stop shop" shopping. There you'll find Macy's, H&M, Forever 21, Zara, Steve Madden and DSW all within steps from one another.
Deli counter at Well Green Market
Itinerary for a day in Brooklyn?

Hop on the subway to Brooklyn Heights (from the Salisbury you can take the F train to York St.), take a stroll through the neighborhood and admire the gorgeous brownstones. Continue north towards the Brooklyn promenade to sit down and take in the beautiful view of city skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge. If you get hungry try Superfine for lunch, brunch or dinner. It's a bar/restaurant in the DUMBO section of Brooklyn, just a few blocks away from the waterfront. They feature organic and local fare as well as art and live music.

MEET THE TEAM : NICK'S PICKS

Nick is a very dedicated and knowledgeable member of the front service staff. He is passionate about architecture, real estate and city planning. Nick spends his time off browsing around the city and staying up to date on any new real estate developments. He knows pretty much every tower and park there is. Here are Nick's four current favorite places to visit.
1. Brooklyn Bridge Park (Brooklyn)

Brooklyn Bridge Park spans 85 acres of the East River waterfront in the Brooklyn Heights and DUMBO neighborhoods of Brooklyn. The park is divided into eleven sections: Piers 1 through 6, Fulton Ferry Landing, Brooklyn Bridge Plaza, Empire Fulton Ferry, Main Street, and John Street. Each of these sections features unique topographies, plantings, amenities, and cultural artifacts and installations.

Pedestrian bridge called the Squibb Bridge connects the park to the Brooklyn Heights Promenade. The Promenade is said to be one of the most romantic spots in New York City, and has been the destination for thousands of first dates, wedding proposals and anniversary celebrations.

Both of these places have magnificent views of the downtown Manhattan skyline, Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. If traveling with kids stop by Jane's Carousel (open year-round) and nautically-themed playground on Main Street. Take a look at all the playgrounds in the park by clicking here. Main Street is also great for picnic in the lawn and it also offers free-wifi.  If you get hungry Nick recommends to try MontyQ Brick Oven Pizza on Montague St. If you prefer something fancier head out to River Cafe (make sure to call ahead to check the status of the renovations due to the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy) and save room for dessert at Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory

Take a look at the Brooklyn Bridge Park's interactive map of the area by clicking here

How to get there: New York Waterway ferry from Pier 11/Wall St. to Dumbo or walk cross the Brooklyn Bridge or take the F subway to York Street, or the A or C to High Street.
2. Meatpacking District

Meatpacking District is  another area that has gone through a major transformation. It's biggest highlights are the Chelsea Market, High line Park and plethora of high end shopping, restaurants and night clubs.

Chelsea Market is an enclosed urban food court, shopping mall, office building and television production facility. Built in the former National Biscuit Company factory complex where the Oreo cookie was invented and produced, the 22-building complex fills two entire blocks bounded by Ninth and Eleventh Avenues and 15th and 16th Streets. Here you'll find an exciting array of restaurants and little stores.

When it's time to take a little break from all the shopping and sightseeing make your way to the High Line Park. The High Line is a 1-mile (1.6 km) linear park built on a 1.45-mile (2.33 km) section of the former elevated New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line. The High Line Park currently runs from Gansevoort Street, three blocks below West 14th Street, in the Meatpacking District, up to 30th Street, through the neighborhood of Chelsea.

The High Line is operating on its summer schedule, with the park open daily from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. If you didn't bring your own food, not to worry, there's plenty of vendors around. Take a look at the list of this year's vendors by clicking here.

Nick's favorite restaurant in the area is SEA which serves affordable and delicious Thai food and delicious cocktails in a trendy atmosphere. SEA is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner at 835 Washington St.

How to get there: subway A or C to 14th St.
3. South Street Seaport

South Street Seaport is comprised of historic buildings and a pavilion shopping mall located at Pier 17 on the East River in Lower Manhattan. Cobblestone streets, gas lamps, sailing ships and a museum make the South Street Seaport one of the most memorable experiences in New York City. Pier 17 at The Seaport is open for business; many others shops still remain closed in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

But not to worry, To make up for that, Fulton street now hosts summer series that include pop-up retail containers that houses up-and coming retailers, a smorgasbar that showcases a rotating collection of a dozen local food and beverage purveyors, a front row cinema, a weekly outdoor film series int he evenings, dozens of new, seasonal retailers with their mix of artisanal fare along with businesses displaced by Hurricane Sandy will be showcased inside Pier 17 and and at kiosks along the cobblestoned streets.

For a nice beer and a burger with beautiful views of Brooklyn-, Manhattan-, and Williamsburg bridges Nick would recommend the Watermark Bar and Lounge at Pier 15.

How to get there: subway A or C to Fulton St.-Broadway Nassau
4. Brookfield Place in Battery Park

Brookfield Place, located in lower Manhattan's Battery Park City, offers year-round cultural showcases featuring both emerging and well-known artists, as well as a great variety of shopping and dining. The Winter Garden at Brookfield Place remains one of the City’s best-kept secrets. The spectacular glass atrium with tall palm trees overlooking the Hudson River makes a picture-perfect venue to have a break and enjoy a delicious meal bought from the food truck court (see food truck schedule by clicking here) or from one of Nick's favorites, Shake Shack which is located within a short walk in Battery Park (215 Murray Street). As a new addition to Brookfield Place is their upscale food court "Hudson Eats" as well as French alternative to Mario Batali's Eataly called "Le District", an authentic French shopping district.

While here visit the North Cove Marina that has great views of Jersey City across the river.

How to get there: subway N or R to Cortlandt St.
